How to Choose the Right Retreat
Tulum is the wellness hub — cenotes (natural swimming holes), jungle yoga shalas, and a spiritual community that's grown rapidly. Sayulita on the Pacific is more laid-back and surf-focused. Oaxaca adds culture, art, and mezcal to the mix. San Miguel de Allende is inland, cooler, and creatively inspiring.
Mexico offers excellent value, especially compared to US-based retreats. A week-long retreat with meals and accommodation typically runs $800–$2,000. The peso makes eating out, massages, and excursions very affordable if you extend your trip.
November to April is ideal — dry, warm, and sunny. May–June is hot but quiet. Hurricane season (August–October) affects the Caribbean coast more than the Pacific. Tulum can be extremely hot and humid in summer.
The cenote experience is uniquely Mexican — swimming in crystal-clear underground pools surrounded by limestone caves. Many Tulum retreats include cenote visits. It's one of those experiences that stays with you physically and emotionally.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is Tulum safe right now?
- The tourist areas of Tulum are generally safe for retreat-goers. Most retreat centers are in the hotel zone or jungle, away from any issues. Use registered taxis, don't walk alone on the beach at night, and your retreat center will brief you on local safety. The vast majority of guests have wonderful experiences.
- How far is Tulum from the airport?
- Cancún airport (CUN) is about 2 hours from Tulum. Many retreats arrange private transfers. Alternatively, ADO buses run direct and are comfortable. Some retreats use the smaller Tulum airport for domestic flights.
- Can I drink the water?
- Stick to bottled or filtered water. All reputable retreats provide purified water. Avoid ice in restaurants outside of tourist areas. Brush your teeth with bottled water for the first few days to be safe.
- What's the yoga scene like compared to Bali?
- Different energy. Mexico's yoga scene is more infused with indigenous traditions — cacao ceremonies, temazcal (sweat lodge), sound healing with local instruments. It feels earthier and more grounded. Bali is more Hindu-influenced and ethereal. Both are wonderful — it depends what calls you.
